He was educated at St' Michaels's Anglican Primary School, Aba and later obtained the Cambridge School Certificate at Aggrey Memorial College, Arochukwu in 1954. Chubby joined the Posts and Telegraphs Department in 1955 as Aeronautical Wireless Communicator and in 1958 he graduated from the P&T Training Centre, Oshodi. He was subsequently posted to the then Ikeja Airport Control Tower on Air Guard Duties.
With burning zeal for acquisition of higher education but with financial challenges he emulated the role models - like Dr. Alvan Ikoku, Late Chief H. O. Davies QC, by reading through St' Albans and Wosley Hall Correspondence Colleges for Matriculation in University of London to read Law as a private student. With the grace of God, Comrade Nwagbara passed the Bachelor of Laws, LL.B Hons. Degree of University of London in June, 1967.
Due to wage differential and preferential treatments among the few Nigerian Radio Officers and their white counterparts, his interest in Trade Unionisism was kindled.
By 1959, Chubby was elected General Secretary of Aeronautical Wireless Workers Union of Nigeria and Cameroon.
The 1978 restructuring of Trade Unions in Nigeria, saw him emerged as Vice President, SSAUSGOC while he was on a course in the United States of America on Investigation of Postal related Offences at the Postal Inspectors Training Academy, Bethesda, Maryland.
In 1981, he became the National President of SSAUSGOC and President-General in 1984 at the 3rd Biennial Delegates Conference in Jos. Vice President SESCAN, the unmbrella body of Senior Staff Association, now known as TUC.
Comrade Chubby is very industrious, resourceful and resolute. To energize him the labour relations role - he attended various Trade Union courses and seminars locally and internationally. Among which are;
- School of Business and Public Administration, Institute of Labour Management Relations of Howards University, washington D.C., USA.
- 59th International Course at the International Institute for Development Co-operation and Labour Studies in Tel-Avir, Israel in 1986.
- Course in Trade Union education by the Natioal Institute for Labour Studies, Ilorin in 1985.
As added tribute, Comrade Nwagbara has an unusual combination of assets such as decisiveness, furness, objectivity and ability to plan, co-ordinate work, analyze situations and make sound decisions.
Perhaps, it was these attributes that made him the General Secretary of the Association after his retirement from Public Service after 35years of unblemished career. He recently retired fron the Post in November, 2008.
Today, we celebrate Comrade Chubby Nwagbara, we rognize your invaluable contributions to Labour relations in Nigeria. A rare gem, a nurturer, a goal getter and an accomplished Investigator. Comrade Nwagbara is married and blessed with resourceful children.
