EDUCATION OF THE GIRL CHILD IS AS IMPORTANT AS THAT OF THE BOY

This is the campaign of the UNI NIGERIA YOUTH WING on June ‘12’ – WORLD’S DAY AGAINST CHILD LABOUR.

According to the resolution at the recent 2nd Uni Africa Youth Conference in Tunisia, that UNI Africa youth shall:-

1.  campaign to raise awareness with their unions and the wider society about the negative impact of child labour on sustainable development.

2.  Promote and integrate trade unions in the activities of the ILO-IPEC (International Programme for the Elimination of Child Labour) e.tc.

Hence, the youth joined the democracy day celebration in Lagos to sensitize the dignitaries at the occasion that the worst form of child labour as defined by the ILO convention 182 exist in most African countries. Leaflets with the message “STOP CHILD LABOUR” boldly written were distributed around and the youth later dashed to the streets campaigning.

The worst form of child labour as defined by ILO convention 182 exist in most African countries, and Nigeria being the giant of Africa is not an exception. Nigeria youth is awake, seeing eradication of child labour as a trade union issue.

The link between HIV-AIDS and child labour is well understood and we are coming up with a sensitization programme for young workers. We cannot ignore the fact that our generation is battling with these problems but we can contribute our own quota to reducing the spread of HIV-AIDS and the number of child labourers in our generation. If our role can bring them to the bearest minimum, fine, before we know it, it is out of place in the next generation.

We are eager to see HIV-AIDS and Child Labour free generation.
