General Information

Established in Kampala, Uganda since 1938, Amalgamated Transport and General Workers' Union (ATGWU - Uganda) is responsible for organising and representing its members in the Transport, Oils, Chemical and Private Security Industries. It is a trade union with a proven track record in handling labour related issues for its members. ATGWU was later re-rigesterd in 1974 after merging with other unions. It is affiliated to Global Unions like International Transport Workers Federation (ITF), Union Network International (UNI) and also locally affiliated to the National Organisation of Trade union Uganda (NOTU).  Workers within our organising jurisdiction out there please this is your chance to join this union. MISSION STATEMENT

To organize and educate workers; recruit and retain members and carry out advocacy through comprehensive systems, policies, procedures in the promotion and protection of rights at work.


Identity of ATGWU
Amalgamated Transport and General Workers' Union (ATGWU) is a free autonomous, democratic and voluntary organisation formed, owned and run by workers in accordance with the provisions of its own constitution. 

Location

The Head office is located at Plot  1066 Sepiruya Mukasa Road - Luzira, off Port Bell Road and opposite Bishop Ciprian Kihangire SSS, with a branch office at Entebbe International Airport.

This Union represents workers engaged in the following trades and industries

Civil Aviation Industry
Road Transport Industry
Logistics and Integrators Industry
Chemical and Oil Industry
Private Security Industry
General workers in support services

Aims and Objectives of the union.

This Union aims at recruiting, actively organising and representing all workers in the above trade and industry into a strong and well informed union force that is capable of facing the growing changes and challenges in the world of employment so as to:

  • Protect and promote their human and trade union rights.
  • Negotiate and maintain sound terms and conditions of service.
  • Establish and maintain mutual respect and trust between workers and employers as a basis for
    harmonious industrial relations.
  • Provide professional guidance and legal assistance to needy members on labour issues and other
    social, political and economic concerns.
  • Develop institutional capacity through workers and trade union education and training.
  • Efficient and effective handling of grievances and resolve dispute at work places.
  • Offer solidarity by co-operating and networking with unions and friendly organisations in the
    pursuance of workers rights.
  • Create awareness among members on all issues of their interest and empower them to actively
    participate in union activities.

Membership eligibility.
Membership of the union is open, without discrimination to all the workers within the jurisdiction of the listed trade and industries. Any worker employed in the above listed trades and industries is eligible and free to join ATGWU on signing a declaration form found on this website.
