Workers calls off demonstration

Government gives in to workers demands.

Workers taking a hard decision to call off demonstration.
The workers in Uganda called off the nation wide planned joint NOTU/COFTU demonstration against NSSF bad governance, maladministration and corruption that was scheduled to take place on Monday 29thSeptember, 2008 after the government giving in to the workers demands.The leaders of the two National Labour Centres  having intensively engaged government into negotiations and consultations they finally reached an understanding on a number of issues concerning workers demands on National Social Security Fund (NSSF).

Some of the key achievements arising from the continuing negotiations with government included: 

  • Fast tracking the Social Security and Pension Reforms a process to be finalised by the end of December 2008. This will involve changing the NSSF Act which will cater for all the needed salient social - economic interests of the workers, in the short, medium and long term.
  • Immediate Reconstitution of the Board of Directors of the NSSF with Workers in the majority representation.
  • Workers to be represented by five members on the NSSF Board.
  • Cabinet to take action on Wednesday on the suspension of the management of the Fund.
