Opening remarks from the COWU General Secretary

 Mr. Benson Okwaro

COWU General Secretary Benson Okwaro expressed gratitude to UNI, Solidarity Centre and the Communications Workers of America (CWA), US for supporting his union. He said by supporting the training of his leadership team, the running of the union would become easier.
COWU is losing membership through the ongoing retrenchments at Telkom Kenya which is set to lay off 12,000 of its 17,000 employees ahead of privatisation. The union has over 70% of its membership (about 11,000) at Telkom and the earlier they make an organising foothold in new telecoms companies the better for the union's survival.
